Meshtastic turns cheap LoRa radios into a private, off-grid text and location mesh. No SIM, no monthly fee—just devices talking to each other.
What you need
- Meshtastic-capable board – e.g. T-Beam, Heltec, or similar ESP32 + LoRa module.
- USB cable – For flashing and power.
- Phone or computer – To configure the device (Meshtastic app or web flasher).
Step 1: Flash the firmware
1. Open meshtastic.org and go to the Flasher (or use the Meshtastic app).
2. Connect the device over USB.
3. Select the correct board type and click Flash. Wait until it finishes.
Step 2: Power and pair
1. Disconnect and reconnect the device (or add a battery if it’s portable).
2. Open the Meshtastic app on your phone and enable Bluetooth.
3. The app should discover the device; tap it to pair and set a name.
Step 3: Join a channel
- Use the default channel to talk to other Meshtastic users nearby on the same region/settings.
- Or create a private channel and share the long-press URL with friends so only you all can see messages.
Next steps
- Attach an antenna for better range.
- Add a second device to test messaging.
- Explore GPS and position broadcast if your board supports it.
You’re now part of the mesh.
