When the grid goes down or you're miles from a tower, a little prep turns your gear into a lifeline. This series covers practical ways to stay connected when it matters.
Power first
- USB power banks – Keep a few charged; they'll run phones and small radios for days.
- Solar – A small panel (10–20W) plus a power bank is enough for comms and lights.
- 12V – If you have a vehicle, a cigarette-lighter USB adapter or small inverter extends runtime.
Comms without cell towers
- Meshtastic / LoRa – Short text and location over a few miles; no subscription.
- GMRS / FRS – Handhelds for family or group coordination.
- Satellite messengers – For real emergencies, a PLB or satellite messenger is worth it.

We'll go deeper into Meshtastic setup, solar sizing, and building a simple go-bag comms kit.
